Avoiding Normalcy

October 8, 2009

I don't have a normal job. I don't wake up, rush out the door in a hurried rush to catch a subway train, bus, or car. I don't have a boss or manager overlooking my every action, or have scheduled lunch breaks and workdays. While I work more than the average American, I'm pretty flexible in my workday, occasionally taking the middle of the day to take walks, run, or enjoy my neighborhood and city. It's really quite nice.

Perhaps the most enjoyable part of my lifestyle is that nobody seems to really understand it. I feel as though I often receive puzzled looks of not living up to my potential, or that I have given up on my dreams and goals. It seems as though to many, since I don't have a structured job, I come across as a slacker, unambitious, and as if I don't have a plan. Of course the opposite is the truth. I have always enjoyed not pursuing life as everyone else does, and perhaps I feel a little superior to those around me who don't quite understand it; those who are slowly giving up their lives to someone else, just letting their quickly expiring time escape them.
