Biphasic Sleep: Day 1

August 31, 2009

I started my biphasic sleep schedule. Last night I took a nap from 8:00pm until 9:30pm, which will be my new nap time, and then I went to sleep again at 3:30am – 6:30am. It was a little difficult to fall asleep for this nap, since I'm coming off of a normal sleeping schedule and I wasn't too tired, and my body wasn't expecting a nap at that time, but I wanted to get started off right, and just staying up until 3:30am seemed like a very long time to be awake!

The hard part of the biphasic sleep schedule is deciding when to take the 1.5 hour nap. I decided that my nap would be at 8:00, so I can have a fairly normal evening, and it won't interfere with my days, especially for weekends when we like to get out and enjoy the day. The 8:00 nap time can also easily be moved a couple of hours later into the evening if social events require me to stay up later.

Being the first day of the experiment, I wasn't too tired for what will be my second waking period (from 9:30pm-3:30am). My first main waking period (6:30am-8:00pm) wasn't too bad. I was lightly tired for much of the day, although my workout at 4:30pm woke me up quite a bit. It felt like I had a little difficulty falling and staying asleep during my evening nap, I awoke a little groggy, but after a few minutes it seemed like I was doing good. Monday's second waking period (Monday 09:30pm – Tuesday 3:30am) was fine. I actually enjoyed my evening of working on personal projects so much, that I really didn't want to go to bed at 3:30am, but I need to be a slave to the schedule, at least until my body gets used to the shift.

All in all, not too bad, but I realize it is the first day of this!
