Attracting and developing backlinks to a website is a major factor in how well a website ranks, and thus how much traffic the website receives. This article outlines several strategies for creating quality backlinks.
Submitting to Directories to Gain Backlinks
Submitting your website to directories still seems to be one of the strongest methods of building backlinks. The biggie, of course is DMOZ, but there are numerous quality directories out there. Some caution should be used during this process. You want to make sure that the directory is of high quality and avoid the mass-submit services that are so prevalant on the web. Slow, manual submissions to directories is the way to go. Also be sure to make sure your antivirus software is up to date. I have on more than one occassion contracted a virus from a directory website...needless to say, I didn't end up submitting my site to those ones!
Contributing to Blogs to Increase Page Rank
Link Roundups
I saw an interesting suggestion on a message board not too long ago--using link roundups to get noticed. Basically, find some blogs that do a daily, weekly, or general link roundup, email the blog owners with one of your best articles from the time period, and see if you get any quality linkbacks.
