TGIF

October 16, 2009

Well, it's Friday once again, and if you are an office worker, you will undoubtabtly here something along the lines of "Thank God It's Friday" (conveniently abreviated"TGIF"). Could there be a more depressing statement in all of American culture?

While we all enjoy Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, the real statement made by this comment is that the rest of the week just sucks and that I am happy that those days are done and over with. The goal on Monday morning is just to make it until Friday, so we can have a couple days to be ourselves, and then wake up again on Monday morning and do it all over again.

The current average life expectency for an American is 77.7 years, which equals 4,051.5 weeks. That isn't a lot of time, and there is so much to do and enjoy. If we are just looking to make it to the last couple days of each of those 4,051.5 weeks, we are truly wasting our lives.

I guess for some, squandering their very limited time on earth is ok, but for those of us who are conscious of the potential and shortness of life, a statement of TGIF is both shortsighted, wasteful, and quite depressing.
